Reflections in a Glass Pond

(Originally written August 4th)
It is eight a.m. and the only human sounds are distant.  There is a constant hum of an interstate road filled with commerce.  The throaty resonance of a Lycoming or Continental engine passes overhead in a small plane.  These I can shut out as I watch the clouds pass across a clear, calm pond spread out before me.
The songs of the robin, the crow of a rooster, the call of a gull framed against the distant tree line are really the sounds that start my day.  I see the signs of life in the pond, but the man-made ones all await the children and their parents to bring them purpose.
Water bugs skim the surface, as skaters on ice, occasionally becoming breakfast for a fish below.   The glassy reflections of this pond hide another world below its surface.  There are small bluegills, sunfish and bass, mussels and grass.  Without much effort we can look deep into the pond, but only on rare occasions do we understand what we see.
The pond is calm today, because the day dawns bright and still.  But when a storm passes over, it reflects the violence of that storm with the same faithfulness.  The surface rises and crashes against the shore; the waves become course and rough.  The inhabitants of this place seek shelter from the turmoil.
Our lives are like this pond, there is the surface we reflect back to the world, and there is much hidden just below the reflections, only rarely seen.  When we are at peace we reflect back a calm and smooth surface, showing others the beauty of the world around us, or within.  When, on the other hand, we are troubled we reflect back those troubles with a course demeanor.
I hope your days are like my pond, calm with time to reflect the beauty around you.
